Position Available: Guide
 
Job overview: The Guides (2 or 3 depending on the number of participants) lead youth ages 10-18 on multi-day overnight expeditions and day trips in the Alaskan backcountry during the summer of 2018. The Guides will act as an instructor in the field, enact and uphold all safety and risk management protocols, be responsible for safety of participants and self as well as promoting the leave-no-trace outdoor ethic. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to singing, teaching camp cooking skills, cooking, distribution of hi-fives, filming, acting silly, gear checks and preparations/ cleanup before and after every trip, basic first aid, leading by example.
 
Timeline: This position begins in May 2018 and ends in late August 2018.
 
Requirements: Successful applicants will have:
  • A passion for environmental education and outdoor adventure and a fun outgoing personality  
  • Backcountry expedition or wilderness experience  (guiding experience preferred)
  • WFR/WFA certification, and experience in rock climbing, mountaineering, SUP, and various other outdoor activities
  • Must pass a background check
 
Compensation and Advancement: HoWL Inc. Offers competitive pay negotiable based on experience, certifications, ability and availability.

Position Available: Day Trips Guide

Job Overview:
  • 10-15 hours per week, starting May, 2018.
  • Coordinate all logistics for two wilderness-based Day Trips per week, including:
    • Thorough activity preparation
    • Risk Management preparation
    • Logistics preparation
    • Transportation and Venue logistics
    • Supplies and other preparation
    • Coordination of volunteers, staff and Peer Leaders
  • Lead 2 Day Trips per week, 11am-4pm each day
  • Market Day Trips via rack card distribution, website updates, poster distributions, Facebook updates, other local marketing tactics
  • Be the “Face of HoWL” in our office, representing and selling our programs to interested parents and youth.
  • Oversee volunteers for other Headquarters tasks
  • Assist with the Executive Director, Program Director and Field Staff with tasks as assigned in HoWL Headquarters.
 
Requirements: Successful applicants will have: 
  • First Aid and CPR certification (preference given to WFA or WFR)
  • Experience planning projects
  • Experience leading wilderness trips
  • Experience working with youth
  • Skills: multi-tasking, detail-oriented, fast learner, good communicator, positive attitude, fun!

2018 HoWL Peer Leaders Programs:
Upon successful completion of the Peer Leader program, HoWL staff will write a letter of recommendation for the student. HoWL Peer Leader volunteer opportunities are excellent opportunities to build a resume and gain professional experience in the nonprofit sector and in the outdoor industry.  This program may also fill high school requirements for community service or work experience. We look forward to having you as part of the team!






Social Media (March 1-end of summer)
​Social media guru to operate and update accounts.
  • Organize HoWL’s photos (2 hours per week at HoWL HQ)
  • Post daily to HoWL’s Instagram and Facebook
  • ​Maintain HoWL’s social media platforms
  • Respond to messages
  • Engage with followers
  • Inform HoWL’s adult staff of changing trends in social media
​
Filmmaker (March 1- end of summer)
DiRtBaG Filmmaker, 2018 HoWL Movie Filmmaker, HoWL Sponsorship Filmmaker
  • View, organize and catalogue HoWL’s clips (2 hrs per week at HQ, seasonal)
  • Work with Dr. Sturm to create storyboards for various films
  • Shoot footage during HoWL programs
  • Edit footage at HoWL Headquarters or at home
  • Promote HoWL’s programming by uploading quality content to social media and Youtube.
 
DiRtBaG Organizer (March 1- April 22, 2018):
Community Partners and Scholarships Coordinator, Litter Clean-Up Coordinator
  • Promote HoWL’s DiRtBaG program through various marketing tactics
  • Solicit cash sponsorships from local businesses
  • Solicit prize donations from national retailers
  • Encourage participation in DiRtBaG Clean-Up
  • Design the back of the DiRtBaG T-shirt
  • Determine highly littered areas
  • Coordinate volunteers and litter pick-up crews
  • DiRtBaG it!
 
Trail Blazer  (Beginning of summer break to end of summer)
Attend HoWL trips free of charge. Lead by example. Offer a helping hand where needed.
  • Take pictures and use them to promote HoWL on social media sites
  • Attend trips free of charge and help where appropriate
  • Work with HoWL employees to create engagement among other HoWLers
  • Lead by example in outdoor etiquette, ethics and safety
  • Be respectful, be courteous, be awesome.
