Fire and Ice August 5-9
Ages 10-13
Build one-match fires. Swim to a glacier. Learn skills to survive in the wild. Fire and Ice is designed especially for students who are new to wilderness adventures.
We spend three days on the Homer side learning necessary survival skills and teamwork, as well as Leave No Trace environmental ethics and wilderness leadership skills through games and direct contact with nature. Then, for the last two days, we head across the bay for an overnight adventure, where we test our skills and get wild. The first three days will each be located in a different area near Homer, to maximize our knowledge of various terrains. We meet at HoWL headquarters every day at 11am and return at 5pm.
On day four we will take a water taxi to Glacier Spit, then backpack in 3 miles to Grewingk Glacier Lake. We will camp at the lake, play games, do group activities, and hike 1 mile out the Saddle Trail the following day.
As on all HoWL trips, health, safety, teamwork and leadership development and fun are key elements to the success of the trip. Lessons on all of the above will enrich the expedition during teachable moments. HoWL instructors have all the experience they need to keep everyone safe and having fun!
Please note your Client Responsibilities: 1) all clients will be required to follow the safety policies and procedures of HOWL and the guides’ instructions during activities. 2) All clients (and parents) will be required to sign a Participant Release of Liability, Waiver of Claims, Assumption of Risks and Indemnity Agreement in favor HOWL before departing on any trip; and 3) each client (and their parents) agree and acknowledge when they sign up for HOWL activities that they have significant responsibilities for their own safety and they agree they are ULTIMATELY RESPONSIBLE for their own safety during participation in HOWL activities.
