Welcome Mike Sturm!
Dear HoWL Family and Homer community,
My name is Mike Sturm. I am very proud to announce that I have accepted the Executive Director position at Homer Wilderness Leaders (HoWL). We are set to have an exciting and impactful 2018 season, and I would like to take this time to introduce myself.
I grew up in Soldotna and spent most weekends fishing out of Homer on my father’s C-dory. As a kid, I frequented the Homer skate park and spent a lot of time strolling the spit. I graduated from Skyview High School and left Alaska to go to college in Spokane, Washington, then to Baltimore, Maryland, where I earned a Bachelor's degree in history and a Master's degree in teaching. I then moved to Hawaii where I have been living and teaching high school for the last 10 years. While teaching, I obtained my Doctorate of Education from the University of Southern California’s Hawaii Cohort program.
I have always been an outdoors person. I grew up hunting and fishing with my father and friends, a pastime that continues to this day. I believe that the creativity and problem-solving skills acquired in the woods are a crucial element to the development of a well-rounded, independent and productive citizen. It is with this belief and a passion for educating youth that I return to my home state of Alaska to become a part of the already exceptional legacy of the HoWL program!
It is truly an honor to be at the helm of HoWL and to become part of the Homer community. I look forward to meeting you.
Yours truly,
Dr. Michael A. Sturm EdD.
